The purpose of sports massage is to alleviate stress and tension which builds up in the body’s soft tissue during physical activity, where minor injuries and lesions occur due to overextension and/or overuse. A constant build up of tension in the muscles from regular activities may lead to stresses on joints, ligaments, tendons, as well as the muscles themselves.
Muscle imbalances may develop and often go undiagnosed until they are serious enough to cause the individual discomfort. By palpating your muscles I may detect variations in the soft tissues and by using the correct techniques, I can help you maintain a much healthier physical state.
Sports massage can help maintain the body’s muscles and also prevent injuries and loss of mobility. It can aid in restoring mobility to injured muscle tissue. Sports massage is the most effective therapy for releasing muscle tension and restoring balance to the musculoskeletal system.
Benefits of Sports Massage.
If you are an active individual at home, work or recreationally, then sports massage should play an important part in the your life, whether you are injured or not. Massage has a number of benefits both physical, physiological and psychological.
Physical effects of massage.
Pumping - The stroking movements in massage draws fluid through blood vessels and lymph vessels. By increasing the pressure in front of the stroke, a vacuum is created behind. This is especially important in tight or damaged muscle tissue as a tight muscle will squeeze blood out like a sponge, depriving the tissues of vital nutrients and energy to repair.
Increased tissue permeability - Deep massage causes the pores in tissue membranes to open, enabling fluids and nutrients to pass through. This helps remove waste products such as lactic acid and encourage the muscles to take up oxygen and nutrients which help them recover quicker.
Stretching - Massage can stretch tissues that could not be stretched in the usual methods. Bundles of muscle fibres are stretched lengthwise as well as sideways. Massage can also stretch the sheath or fascia that surrounds the muscle, so releasing any tension or pressure build up.
Ankle massage break down scar tissue - Scar tissue is the result of previous injuries or trauma and can effect muscle, tendons and ligaments. This can lead to inflexible tissues that are prone to injury and pain.
Improve tissue elasticity - Hard training can make tissues hard and inelastic. This is one reason why hard training may not result in improvements. Massage helps reverse this by stretching the tissues.
Opens micro-circulation - Massage does increase blood flow to tissues, but so does exercise. What massage also does is open or dilate the blood vessels and by stretching them this enables nutrients to pass through more easily.
Physiological effects of sports massage
Pain reduction - Tension and waste products in muscles can often cause pain. Massage helps reduce this in many ways including releasing the bodies endorphins.
Relaxation - Muscles relax through heat generated, circulation and stretching. Mechanoreceptors which sense touch, pressure, tissue length and warmth are stimulated causing a reflex relaxation.
Psychological effects of massage
Anxiety reduction - through the effects mentioned above relaxation is induced and so reduces anxiety levels.
Invigorating - if massage is done with brisk movements such as what would be done before an event can produces an invigorating feeling.
Who would benefit from a sports massage?
My sports massage therapies are not just for athletes. Many of my clients do not play sports, but their jobs place demands on their bodies in different ways. From office workers to the self-employed, our bodies are put through a lot during our daily activities and sports massage therapies are beneficial in keeping you healthy and happy.
Self Employed Business People
Can suffer from overuse and posture imbalance type injuries. Muscular tightness from emotional stress builds up slowly and then develops into pain.
How I can help.
We recommend therapies based on deep tissue massage and stretches, aiding full relaxation and correction. As a result, posture and flexibility improves. Prevention massage once every 4-6 weeks keeps muscles healthy, flexible and injury-free reducing body stress and allowing these Clients to keep working and earning.
The demands of trade jobs put many joints under a lot of pressure which can lead to tendonitis, tendinitis, tenosynovitis, ligament damage and bursitis. Typical examples include medial epicondylitis (pain on the inside of the elbow); lateral epicondylitis (pain on the outside of the elbow); patella tendonitis (pain in the knees).
How I can help.
All these conditions require remedial therapy followed with ice/heat and stretching exercises. Rest is not usually an option for these clients, but a course of 2-3 close treatments usually has beneficial results allowing them to move on to prevention massage once every 6 weeks to keep injury-free.
Bad muscle alignment problems make you more vulnerable to injury creating tension in the neck, shoulders and lower back. Fatigue from long hours standing can also develop poor alignment habits such as placing more weight on one hip, or pulling your shoulders back in a ‘military stance’.
How I can help.
Deep tissue massage, muscle energy stretch techniques and active release stretches can help correct posture to a certain extent, but treatment (along with aftercare), also makes you more aware of your bad habits allowing you to correct them.
Painful symptoms can develop from poor body alignment. For example, sitting at a desk in front of the computer screen forces the head and neck to be pushed forward. Holding the telephone tucked between your chin and shoulder places stress on the neck and upper back. Both can refer pain into the lower back.
How I can help.
To realign the body, remedial and deep tissue massage therapy are the best treatments incorporating muscle energy stretch techniques and active release techniques. Usually 1-2 treatments are needed before moving on to prevention treatments to keep you pain-free.
Injuries can occur through a lack of strength if you have undertaken an activity that your body is not strong enough to handle or from doing the same activity day after day.
How I can help.
These types of injury require remedial treatment (2-3 treatments are recommended) if you have sustained strains or sprains; or deep tissue/prevention massage if the problem is due to muscle tension, with aftercare advice on how to avoid the situation re-occurring.
These treatments are designed to be more gentle, so a lighter and shorter treatment is usually required. Many elderly people have mobility problems, so treatments are modified to suit their capabilities.
Recreationally Active individuals
Overuse may often create problems and imbalances in the soft tissue. If these are ignored and allowed to become chronic, they will not only hinder the individual’s rate of improvement, but their performance may well suffer and ultimately they may be susceptible to developing more serious conditions.
How can I help.
Massage helps to reduce the delayed onset of muscle soreness (DOMS) by reducing inflammation, decreasing pain, relieving tightness and removing waste products from the muscles.
After intense activity, muscle fatigue and soreness may occur. DOMS is classified as a type 1 muscle strain and can vary from slight muscle stiffness to severe, debilitating pain that restricts movement.
The aim of the the massage is to help increase mobility, stretch muscle fibres, aid the removal of waste , separate adhesions, breakdown scar tissue and stimulate the healing process.
When would massage therapy not be recommended?
There are times when sports massage could be detrimental rather than beneficial to you.
The contra-indications to massage are:
• A body temperature, fever or feeling unwell.
• Acute traumas – open wounds, recent bruising, muscle tears, sprained ligaments, contusions, chilblains, and burns.
• Tumours – where there is swelling, which is inconsistent with recent bruising.
• Diseased blood vessels – Varicose veins, phlebitis, thrombosis
• Infectious skin disease – bacterial infection, lymphangitis, fungal infection, viral infections, Herpes
• Diabetes - massage has the same effect as exercise on your blood sugar levels, so you need to have appropriate medication available.

The two leg muscles, the gastrocnemius and the soleus, together form your calf. The calf powers the achilles tendon, which controls the heel. Pain in the calf is usually the result of inflammation or injury to these muscles or the tendon. The sports massage techniques will help to relax the calf and promote healing.
Sports massage is beneficial after muscle injuries such as a quad strain as it helps to increase blood flow to the muscles which aids the healing process. Muscle flexibility may be improved. This is often decreased following a tear in the muscle. Massage is also thought to realign scar tissue and improve its elasticity.
Most people suffer from tension in their necks and shoulders at some time in their lives, which is hardly surprising if you consider the job the neck has to do! Poor posture, bad working positions, and carrying heavy bags all conspire to make the problem worse. Massage techniques for the shoulder girdle will help to increase blood circulation to the area, which also increases oxygen and nutrient flow, which will encourage healing.
Muscle strain in the lower back or upper back/neck. Most episodes of acute lower back pain are caused by muscle strain, such as from lifting a heavy object, a sudden movement or a fall. Lower back pain can be very severe and last for several hours, several days or even a few weeks. When back muscles are strained or torn, the area around the muscles can become inflamed. With inflammation, the muscles in the back can spasm and cause both severe lower back pain and difficulty moving. The large upper back muscles are also prone to irritation, either due to de-conditioning (lack of strength) or overuse injuries (such as repetitive motions). Upper back pain may also be due to a specific event, such as a muscle strain, sports injury, or auto accident. Sports massage can help work out the spasm/irritation and improve range of motion.
