What is Indian Head Massage?
It is an extremely effective therapy that has evolved from traditional techniques practised in India as part of family rituals for over a thousand years. The treatment involves massage to the upper back, shoulders, upper arms, neck, face and scalp. During the therapy you will remain seated in an upright position. Although Indian head massage has been in existence in India for many years it has only recently started to gain popularity in the West
This massage works on significant areas of the body, especially the neck and the shoulders where stress affects major muscle groups. And it often brings immediate relief. Tensions are eased and fibrous knots and nodules melt away. The efficiency of the circulatory and lymphatic systems improve, toxins are dispersed from tense muscles and flexibility and fluidity of movement is restored.
There are energy centres in the shoulder, upper back, neck, upper arms and face regions, the treatment of which can benefit the whole body. A combination of rhythmic strokes will soothe and rebalance the energy flow, creating feeling of ease and peace.

What Happens During Your Indian Head Massage Treatment?
On your first visit for Indian Head Massage a consultation will be carried out to check out any medical need, and health check to eliminate and contraindicated conditions. The treatment is non-invasive, you do not need to remove any clothing (it is recommended for men to wear a T-Shirt and for ladies a shoe-string top). The treatment will be carried out seated.
Indian Head Massage contraindications
• Recent head or neck injury
• Severe bruising in treatment area
• Recent haemorrhage (especially, brain)
• High or low blood pressure
• History of thrombosis or embolism
• Dysfunction of nervous system (i.e. meningitis, inflammation of the brain)
• Skin disorders, cuts and abrasions to treatment area
• Scalp infections
• Recent operations to treatment area
• Under the influence of alcohol or drugs
• Arthritis/osteoporosis in treatment area
Some medical conditions may affect your treatment and may mean some localised areas need to be avoided during treatment and or the therapy may not be able to be carried out. Some of these are listed above. If you are in any doubt, please consult your GP before starting massage therapy, I can provide you with a GP referral letter to take along with you to your appointment, he/she then can sign relevant section and you can return it to me.
On your first visit a full confidential consultation will take place with me. (All therapists should adhere to the principles of the Data Protection Act 1998).
The seven chakras are located in a vertical line straight through the body. Each chakra serves a unique purpose in your life and wellbeing, so it’s important that energy flows through all of them efficiently. When you are relaxed through an Indian head massage, your chakras are aligned into their ideal healing positions. The Indian head massage chakras all contribute in different ways to your mental, spiritual, and physical health.
1. The root – represents your foundation and helps you stay grounded
2. The sacral – enables your ability to connect with and accept others
3. The solar plexus – allows you to stay in control of your life
4. The heart – of course is the area from which you love and achieve joy
5. Throat – where your ability to communicate comes from
6. Third eye/ brow – lets you focus and see the big picture
7. Crown – represents the highest level: full spirituality
During treatment, you will remain fully clothed, and will be seated on a comfortable, low-backed chair. The massage is done through light clothing. Ideally, for women a shoe string top and for a man a T- shirt should be worn, to allow easy access to the upper back, shoulders and arms. Whilst the treatment is performed, I wrap a warm and comfortable blanket around you so that your shoulders and upper back can be bare. Firm and gentle rhythmical movements are used to release the stress that accumulated in the tissues, muscles and joints of the upper back, shoulders and arms. You will be left feeling relaxed and revitalised, energised and ready for the next part of the Indian head massage.
Receiving an Indian head massage is a great way to reduce or eliminate neck and shoulder complaints. Massage can relax the tension in your muscles and other soft tissues, help to increase range of motion, restore flexibility, and increase the nerve flow through the area. Leave the weight of the world behind for a while and unwind a little!
Scalp massage uses specific techniques unique to this form of treatment. It stimulates the nerves and the blood supply to the scalp. I use petrissage, friction, pressure and effleurage. I apply light pressure on specific points using fingertips and thumbs. These points, found along the ‘meridians’ of the body, release blocked ‘energy’.
This is an extremely relaxing massage that certainly helps with lymphatic drainage and a sense of calm.
The treatment concludes with a rebalancing of the four higher chakras; the heart, throat, brow and crown chakras. These are concerned with our emotions, communication and expression, inner vision, and thinking and decision making. As you will appreciate, it is essential that all these aspects of ourselves are in balance, so that we can move forward in a positive and effective way. Treatment time is typically 45 minutes.
Using oil conditions the scalp and hair and adds to the sense of relaxation. Tension sometimes causes hair loss and an oil massage can help stimulate hair growth. Oil is not always desired and its use will depend on your wishes and needs. Oil will leave the hair oily, which may not be practical. However, if you wish, I can use oil on the neck, shoulders and arms.
